Jakarta, Indonesia | Champalimaud Design
The Four Seasons Jakarta is a landmark luxury hotel project designed to balance European elegance with Indonesian craft and cultural narrative. The overarching design intention was to create spaces that envelop guests in a spirit of scale, elegance, and contemporary hospitality, using a sophisticated palette complemented by details inspired by both Asian and European cultures — with an emphasis on respecting local context and living. Working alongside a small core design team of designers and an architect, I was deeply involved in the development of the hotel from concept through documentation, contributing to the design of the overall interior architecture, finishes, and more than 250 custom furniture, lighting, and Axminster carpet designs created specifically for the property. Within the constraint that all items be sourced and produced locally in Indonesia, the team was challenged to develop highly creative solutions with limited resources, resulting in a richly layered and technically complex design.
My role included leading the design of the model room and serving as the primary designer for the Library — a signature public space within the hotel. For the Library, I developed the complete conceptual design, architectural detailing, finishes, and all FF&E selections. This space was uniquely preserved without revision by the client and was installed exactly as originally presented, reflecting a rare level of design approval and trust. In addition, I worked with the team to produce the complete furniture specification and drawing package for the entire hotel, encompassing multiple restaurants and bars, typical guest rooms and suites, and public spaces. I also organized material reviews and substitutions and coordinated closely with clients, purchasers, and vendors to ensure faithful execution across all areas of the project.
